I’m starting a new series on Daytripssocal.com called “3 Hour Jaunts”. There are so many fun things to do in Southern California that they need to be broken down into full day trips (10 hours or more), half day trips (between 3-6 hours or more) and what I call “3 Hour Jaunts”.
With the massive onslaught of at-home entertainment (both indoor electronics and outdoor activities) the only reason to leave home and battle endless traffic is for a minimum of 3 hours. So, on The SoCal Blog I will be frequently posting various things to do that take 3 hours and are worth all 180 minutes.
During my first 3 Hour Jaunt I visited one of my favorite SoCal museums, The Autry Museum of the American West, otherwise known as The Autry. The Autry sits near the outskirts of Griffith Park and directly across from The Los Angeles Zoo, so if you want to make this 3 Hour Jaunt into a half day trip or a full day trip, you can. Or if you want to couple a trip to one of the best breweries in Los Angeles, Golden Road Brewery, in nearby Atwater Village, you can easily do that too. Though, the cafe at The Autry serves some Golden Road brews and is the best museum cafe I have eaten at.
If you are nerd like me you love old Western films, Western history and interesting rotating exhibits like the Route 66 exhibit I visited a few years ago or the current Play exhibit, which explores the history of toys and allows kids to interact with the various toys (through January 7, 2018). The Autry also houses one of the largest collections of Colt Revolvers in the world.
Admission is a bargain at $14 for an adult, though Groupon usually has deals so make sure you check there first.
The Autry also had a unique film exhibit on California Road Trips, which was perfect for the launch of The Road Trip Blog a few days ago.
Do you and your kids a favor and check out this gem in the heart of Los Angeles soon.
